Narrative
Synopsis:
The
Way in Which Things Operate draws from from Sokolow's family’s
Chicago history and expands into larger questions about the Chicago
Jewish immigrant experience. The piece follows the narrator on
a madcap quest starting at the famed Manny’s Deli, through
the streets of Lawndale and Humboldt Park, and ending at Spertus,
where a crucial piece of information is discovered in the museum’s
Open Depot collection display. Sokolow juxtaposes the likes of
Robert DeNiro, her grandfathers and cousin, and fictional characters
with questions surrounding JFK’s assassination, contested
family stories, and corned beef on rye. |
