Untitled Performance (Breath & Balloons 1998), Cleveland, OH
For five and half-hours all of Shellabarger’s exhaled breath was collected in clear latex balloons. As each balloon was filled it was tied off and set aside by an assistant. The encompassing pile of balloons that resulted showed the massive volume of air that had passed through his lungs and became a sculptural remnant of the performance.
