Gallery Background:
Western Exhibitions is a commercial gallery showing emerging artists who work in contemporary idioms. Begun in 2002 as a "portable gallery", director Scott Speh exercised all of the functions of an art gallery without a permanent bricks-and-mortar space until 2004, when Western Exhibition moved into a three-room former factory space on Chicago's west side. Western Exhibitions moved to Chicago's West Loop gallery district in September 2008. The gallery focuses on staging solo shows of gallery and non-gallery artists who are given complete freedom to realize their projects. Gallery 1 houses large solo shows and Gallery 2 exhibits artist projects and thematic group shows. Western Exhibitions shows work in all media by emerging and established artists and maintains a specific inventory of artist books.
