Gallery Background:
Western Exhibitions is a commercial gallery showing emerging artists who work in contemporary idioms. Begun in 2002 as a "portable gallery", director Scott Speh exercised all of the functions of an art gallery without a permanent bricks-and-mortar space until 2004, when Western Exhibition moved into a three-room former factory space on Chicago's west side. The gallery focuses on staging solo shows of gallery and non-gallery artists who are given complete freedom to realize their projects. Gallery 1 houses large solo shows, Gallery 2 exhibits artist projects and thematic group shows and Gallery 3 often presents works on paper and artist books. In September 2008, Western Exhibitions will move to 119 N. Peoria in Chicago's West Loop Gallery District.
