Fall 2010 at Western Exhibitions | A Preview
September
10 to October 9, 2010
Gallery 1: BEN STONE

Ben Stone continues his transformations of two-dimensional images from
popular sources into compelling and uncanny three-dimensional forms
with six new sculptures that investigate criminal impulses and strange
energies. Subjects include the attack of a Kansas City Royals baseball
coach by drunken White Sox fans, Team Rocket from the Pokémon
animated series; the anachronistic criminal found on neighborhood watch
signs, Abraham Lincoln's relationship with the Chicago Bears and a five-foot
tall elephant made of coils of rope. Full press release here
Gallery 2: JOEY FAUERSO
Joey Fauerso will show two videos and figurative watercolors on paper
that combine landscapes and figures, exploring grey areas between fantasy
and reality and challenging notions of the "erotic landscape".
"Me Time" is an eight-minute video showing Fauerso making
out with a series of puppets. In "Clearing", Fauerso plays
a flute in the forest, seducing a young naked man who twirls around
until he collapses, while flocks of animated birds fly overhead. Full
press release here
October 15 to November 13, 2010
Gallery 1 + 2: MILLER & SHELLABARGER

Miller & Shellabarger will show work from several inter-related
projects: two new series of silhouettes, one where their beards are
conjoined and the other where larger-than-life, full-body images take
advantage of how light and shadow distort the human figure in silhouette;
a twin set of pillowcases, each monogrammed with their initials using
hair from their beards as thread; body outline drawings made from gunpowder;
embossed lead portraits; and images and objects from a recent performance,
"Untitled (Pyre)", where they found two naturally fallen,
moderately sized trees in the forest, chopped and sawed them into fireplace-sized
pieces, stacked the pieces into roughly human sized forms and burned
the resulting pyres at dusk.

19 to December 31, 2010
Gallery 1: DEB SOKOLOW

Sokolow is currently at work writing a series of disparate chapters
on everything from architectural oddities and conspiracy theories to
manners and food for a book that will never fully exist. The implication
of an overarching narrative, meta-narrative moments and the voice of
Sokolow's unreliable protagonist, though, are the common threads among
these non-sequential chapters as is her decision to handwrite each chapter
onto a singular, same-sized paper page. All drafts, erasures and revisions
are layered onto the page so that this page, when finished, will represent
a complete visual record of the chapter's writing process. And each
chapter's text will be accompanied by various supporting visuals such
as architectural renderings, maquettes, books, binders, painted collages
and other objects.
Gallery 2: "The Power of Selection, part 3"
curated by Ryan Travis Christian
The Power of Selection Part 3 is the third in a series of three shows
curated by Ryan Travis Christian for Western Exhibitions. Christian,
who writes for Fecalface.com, Beautiful Decay and selects an Artist
of the Day, each and every day on his Facebook page, has organized these
shows, the first in January, the second in June and the third here in
November, to increase the circulation of contemporary artwork seen in
Chicago by showing works from out of town and/or up-and-coming artists.
Artists in this salon-style blow-out include Michelle Blade, Louisa
Chase, Chris Duncan, Joseph Hart, Maya Hayuk, Matt Irie, Jason Jagel,
Michael Kreuger, Matt Lock, Alex Lukas, Bill McRight, Frankie Martin,
