A
Few Snapshots from History
plus Pedro Velez: New Drawings
A
Few Snapshots from History will document the prior installation
of an art show called Waterfalls of America by
Nicholas Frank. The waterfalls, constructed from pharmacy-grade
household waterflow relaxation devices, will be visible in a set of
photographs featuring the artist, gallerist and assistants/friends installing
the waterfalls throughout the domestic setting.
Nicholas
Franks work as a gallerist, artist and dialogue
organizer is, generally speaking, folded into one effort, which can
best be described as "platforming." Artist David Robbins coined
the term platforming to describe the activities of Frank
and other artists-slash-curators-slash-whatever whose work involves
the oragnization of events and other artists work. A Few
Snapshots from History is a part of a longstanding project, The
Nicholas Frank Biography, individual pages of which have been
exhibited in Chicago and Minneapolis. The biography focuses solely on
the art production and platforming activities of Nicholas Frank, activities
that have included running the Hermetic Gallery; organizing the Hermetic
Lecture Series in Milwaukee; exhibiting
at the Milwaukee Art Museum, inova
in Milwaukee, the Chicago Project Room and the Soap Factory in Minneapolis;
writing for Artpapers, New Art Examiner, Bridge,
Xtra and interreview.org.
His work is in the collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum and Pedro
Velez.
Pedro
Veleznew drawings continue to confound, titillate
and suggest questions about the life span of curatorial decisions, morality
in art and taste in contemporary society. His recent solo shows include
"Ann Lee and the Devil in Lamb UC" at the Rectangle Space,
Miami (December 2003), "Devil in Lamb UC" at Space 601in Puerto
Rico (October 2003), TBA
Space in Chicago (2002), "Pretending to Pretend" at The
Soap Factory in Minneapolis (2002); "Pedro Velez and Juana Valdes"
at the Bronx River Art Center in New York (2002) and "Paintings
1999-2003" at Western Exhibitions in Chicago (spring of 2003).
Velez' work was seen in group shows at Locust
Projects and Ingalls & Associates, both in Miami; Cueva Gallery
in Milan; the Institute of Puertorrican Culture in San Juan; and the
Stray Show with Western Exhibitions in Chicago. His poster was the
inaugural project for POST-Chicago.
